Treaties Recognition Week

November 7, 2022

November 6 to 12, 2022 is Treaties Recognition Week. TRCA recognizes the importance of treaties and the significance of treaty rights, treaty relationships, and their relevance today.

In 2016, Ontario passed the first legislation of its kind in Canada, declaring the first full week of November as Treaties Recognition Week.

First Nations were the original occupants of this land we call Ontario. Treaties within TRCA’s jurisdiction include several with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and Williams Treaties First Nations:

  • Toronto Purchase/Treaty 13
  • Head of the Lake Purchase/Treaty 14
  • Ajetance Purchase/Treaty 19
  • Williams Treaties

TRCA is committed to building long-term, meaningful relationships with First Nations and Indigenous communities in the work we do to safeguard and enhance the health of our watersheds and communities. Through intentional and collaborative efforts TRCA continues to take steps towards truth and reconciliation.

Learn more about the history of treaties and the role they play in our lives and relationships with each other.

For any questions, please feel free to reach out to your Divisional representatives on TRCA’s Indigenous Engagement Working Group.
