The Grassland Stewardship Initiative is a habitat restoration initiative implemented by Grasslands Ontario, a division of Forests Ontario. The goal of this initiative is to support the conservation and recovery of Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark populations through the management and protection of high-quality grassland habitat in Ontario. Project activities may begin as early as Spring 2023.
The primary objectives of the Grassland Stewardship Initiative are to:
- Create, maintain, and enhance grassland habitat for Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark within suitable areas in Ontario
- Sequester carbon
- Promote voluntary landowner participation
- Seek and develop partnerships with various sectors and organizations
- Promote greater public awareness and appreciation of grasslands and the species which inhibit grasslands in Ontario.
Key Eligibility Criteria includes:
- Sites must be located within the core breeding range of Bobolink and/or Eastern Meadowlark.
- Bobolink and/or Eastern Meadowlark must also have been observed near the site in the past year or the site contains ideal habitat features for either species (a Habitat Quality Assessment will need to be conducted).
- The project has the capacity to sequester carbon in the long term
