The objective of the Great Lakes Protection Initiative (GLPI) is to restore the water quality and aquatic ecosystem health of Canadian Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs). To assist in achieving this objective, ECCC is making funding available to support action at the local level to restore water quality and aquatic ecosystem health by completing actions identified in AOC Remedial Action Plans (RAPs).
The purpose of the 2023-2024 Call for Proposals is to solicit project proposals that implement actions identified in the AOCs’ most current RAPs and contribute to the restoration of beneficial uses (BUIs) and the eventual delisting of the AOCs. Proposals must clearly demonstrate how the project will contribute to these goals.
Of the identified BUIs for the Toronto and Region AOC, the following are listed as “impaired” or “require further assessment” as of 2021:
- Restrictions on fish consumption
- Beach Closures
- Eutrophication
- Degradation of fish and wildlife populations
- Loss of fish and wildlife habitat
- Degradation of zooplankton and phytoplankton (RFA)
Proposed projects should work to address one of the above BUIs or otherwise fit within the Toronto and Region Area of Concern Workplan (2020-2025).
If you are interested in applying, please contact the Funding and Grants Coordinators: Max Smith (max.smith@trca.ca) or Samuel Hale (samuel.hale@trca.ca) to discuss your project’s eligibility.
