World Backup Day – March 31

March 31, 2019

TRCA has approximately 700 full-time staff using a combined 30 terabytes of data. Information is central to everything we do and today, World Backup Day, serves as a very important reminder to secure our corporate records. At TRCA, your information is stored in onsite file servers as well as the cloud. By the time we move into the new head office all our information will be stored in the cloud.

On World Backup day here are some interesting facts about TRCA Data:

  • All our servers are backed up daily at 8:00 pm Monday to Friday every week of the year.
  • Backups are stored locally to the server and kept 2 weeks for easy file restores.
  • A second backup is also stored locally to the server with a retention time of 2 months.
  • A third backup copy is stored off-site at Restoration Services Centre with a 6-month retention.

Onsite and off-site backups are a very important part of any technology system for an organization. Backups are accessed when individuals accidentally delete a file or folder and need to have it restored. Backups are also used if there is a failure of the technology that runs our applications and stores our data. One of the benefits of our journey to the cloud as we move off network drives and shared folders and onto OneDrive and Teams is the fact that recovering lost files is much easier and faster for individuals.

Whether your data is on servers in our buildings or in the cloud, you should have peace of mind knowing it is safe and secure!

Keep working, keep creating knowing that the Information Technology Management Team has your back.

Happy World Backup Day.
