Staff Feature – Planting Team

It’s an annual event at TRCA: spring planting season!

Each year the Ecosystem Management team gears up to plant thousands of trees and shrubs over a short nine-week period.

The project management and coordinator/technologist teams prepare for months. From developing planting plans and planning community stewardship events, to recruiting and onboarding of dozens of field staff, and engaging hundreds of community, student, and corporate group volunteers, this team does it all!

Field crews work tremendously hard, sometimes in tough site and weather conditions, across the whole jurisdiction on TRCA-owned land, municipal lands, federal lands, and private land.

This spring, the team is planting more than 164,000 native trees, shrubs, and bioengineering stems at over 88 sites – from the Etobicoke-Mimico watershed to the Carruthers watershed, and from Lake Ontario to the top of the Oak Ridges Moraine!

The Community Stewardship Program team works with schools, community and corporate volunteers to plant trees and shrubs at scheduled events, while the public and private land teams plant a wide variety of sites, including recently completed wetland and stream restoration projects, erosion mitigation projects, and pure reforestation sites.

Every stem planted contributes to improved natural cover conditions, and eventually future forests!
