Updated TRCA Strategic Plan

November 14, 2018

I am pleased to announce that the Board of Directors has endorsed the five year update to TRCA’s Strategic Plan, which reflects input from staff, stakeholders and Board members.

The updated Strategic Plan retains the strategic directions of the original plan issued in 2013 (Building The Living City: the TRCA 2013-2022 Strategic Plan) but is more outcome-oriented. It also recognizes the role of Toronto and Region Conservation Foundation and our partners in advancing priority projects and initiatives.

The five year update places greater emphasis on TRCA’s traditional mandated roles and responsibilities and our valuable implementation role for our partners. It also includes projected strategic accomplishments and key performance measures that permit us to clearly demonstrate success in delivering projects and programs, and will allow all TRCA staff members to see how their work can contribute to the successful delivery of TRCA’s Strategic Plan.

Further new areas of focus in the updated Strategic Plan include:

  1. Expanding TRCA’s fee-for-service work for government, private sector and non-profit stakeholders to facilitate the efficient delivery of initiatives in areas of TRCA expertise;
  2. Reducing flood risks and protecting communities through improvements to TRCA’s flood forecasting and warning program, with special emphasis on increasing communication channels prior to, during and following weather events;
  3. Working with municipal partners to implement flood remediation, erosion monitoring maintenance work, stormwater system retrofits, low impact development green infrastructure, and water quality and habitat restoration projects to realize more sustainable developments;
  4. Advancing and implementing TRCA’s Regional Trails Strategy, Erosion Hazard Mitigation Strategy, Natural Heritage Strategy and Master Plans; and
  5. Investing in existing infrastructure to provide safe accessible and functional facilities to the public.

This updated Plan is TRCA’s roadmap for the next five years. It will guide our actions and help set the standards by which we, and others, will assess our success. I encourage you to review it with particular attention to areas of work connected to your job responsibilities. For now, you can access the updated plan document that was reviewed by the Board of Directors. We will be posting a final designed version on the TRCA website in the coming weeks, and printing a limited number for distribution to our partners and key stakeholders.

I thank all TRCA staff who contributed to the development of this Strategic Plan update and look forward to working with all of you to put it into action over the next five years.

Sincerely,

John MacKenzie, M.Sc.(Pl) MCIP, RPP
Chief Executive Officer
