Waste Not, We Want Please: TRCA works with GTAA to Reuse Bins

November 14, 2017

Working through the PPG’s Materials Exchange platform TRCA got wind that the Greater Toronto Airport Authority was going to scrap nine outdoor metal waste bins unless an opportunity to reuse them could be found within the week.

The bins were in good condition and with a new coat of paint would be ideal at our TRCA sites. Working with GTAA and Black Creek Pioneer Village, staff from the Corporate Sustainability group retrieved the bins and gave them a new lease on life. Look forward to seeing them in the parking lot at BCPV or at Bathurst Glen Golf Course in the near future.

The bins weighted 46 kg each, representing a diversion of over 400 kg of metal from scrap. The initiative demonstrates what is waste to one company can be valuable for another company and fuel for the circular economy.

Got items at your site that can be reused? Or have perceived value?

(Think: wood pallets, obsolete furniture, bulk plastics, large sorted quantities of anything!)

If so, staff from PPG and the Corporate Sustainability coordinator are here to help you divert these items at low or no cost when compared with landfilling. Help us reach our diversion rate of 80% by 2020 by telling us what you have that can be diverted, recycled, or reused, so we can supply local green jobs with the resources of the circular economy.
